A day in the Delta

"BIKE" I shouted to the two ahead of me - a motorbike was coming up behind us, about to pass.  We were riding old one speed bicycles on a narrow 5' wide concrete path.  When cyclists and motorbikes came towards us, I had to focus hard to stay to the side, not wobble or go off the edge.

We'd been picked up at our hotel and travelled by van for our day in a small part of the Mekong Delta.  At an island we got off the boat cycled for about an hour, stopping twice to visit locals.  Once was to see a couple who lived beside a canal, and had a pond where they raised fish.  At the other stop we met elderly Mrs. Trang, who showed us how she makes rice paper (more like thin wraps), then let us try; mine was a bit of a mess on one side, but Brad had more luck (he says skill).

Back on the boat, we were served lunch as we chugged along.

Lunch on the mighty Mekong
Tying the boat to a post stuck in the mud, our captain held the rope of a sampan so we could step down into the tippy narrow wooden boat.  We donned cone hats and were propelled into a canal between islands where a lot of fruit is grown.

Back on the boat we went past a small floating market - families live on their boats, and sell fruit and vegetables they buy from the islands across the way.  You know what they have for sale by looking at what they have attached to the top of a pole at the front of the boat.
You can see the rain clouds approaching...
The rain started soon after we headed back to the city
